Headen Park

Story

  • In a Club throwing contest at Headen Park (1981/82), Andrew Small threw a ball from one side of the ground to the other (east/west).
  • Famous quotes:
Raj Anand – star all-rounder and cricket tragic for B1 made a name for himself in 2004 when he had a heart attack while batting at Headen Park. Apart from finishing at 39* he was taken to hospital and almost died on the operating table. When he was lying on the operating table Raj remembers the doctors having to remove his protector before they could start to operate. But wait, there is more. The first thing Raj said when he came around after the operation was “Will I be able to play cricket again” – he did and did it well.
  • Famous people:
    • John Howard, former Prime Minister played between 1962/63 and 73/74. John played in a match in the early 1960’s, before they did it up and the blackberry patch was removed at the Thornleigh end. In a famous incident, the ball went hard and high towards the boundary, where the future Prime Minister was fielding. He had some trouble seeing the ball at most times, and was groping myopically at it as he edged back. Finally, the ball landed, just as John went over the edge. When the others arrived to see where he was, he was impaled in crucifix formation among the blackberries. One old wag commented years later, “We had a discussion about whether to pull him out or leave him there” – ofcourse the right decision was made to remove him – eventually.
