Women & Girls cricket
Cricket Australia awards
Great news during the week that CNSW has nominated West Penno for the Cricket Australia ‘Women & Girls initiative of the Year’. This is one of the most prestigious annual national awards within Australia and to even be nominated is an amazing achievement. We won it last season so the opportunity to go back to back is special.
The nomination is based on the implementation of our new playing & volunteer uniforms that have been received amazingly well by our players and opposition players.
Girls Festival of cricket
The Girls Festival of cricket is being run again next Saturday (11 February). This is an amazing initiative, run by our Girls Division (Grant & Suz), who runs a Carnival of cricket over next Saturday and combines this with a Pink Stumps initiative.
We host T20 games at Greenway Park and John Purchase Ovals all day Saturday and use this to raise money for the McGrath Foundation.
This is an amazing experience for everyone who attends and to get the support of the Association by allocating one of our best grounds to the Girls is recognition of the importance the Girls game has within our Association.
More details will follow.
Women’s Social Cricket – underway
Great news about the highly successful Women’s Social Cricket Smash started last Wednesday (1 February) and continues to 15 March. Details are:
- When: Wednesday 1 February to 15th March 2023
- Where: Mark Taylor Oval, Waitara
- Time: 6.00 pm to 7.30 pm
- Cost: $70 for 7 weeks
It is never too late to join so if you want to form a Team or just turn up as a single player – everything can be arranged.
What is the Social Smash
For those new to this concept it is as much about having a game of cricket with other women in a safe and non-judgemental environment as it is about laying out a blanket on the ground after the game and sharing a glass of wine and nibbles with friends and new found friends without having to rush home.

WPH Lions Football Club registrations
We support all local Sporting groups within our community and have a great relationship with our community sporting colleagues from other Codes. Our relationship with the Lions goes back to when they started in 1969 with members of the West Penno Cricket Club playing a key part in setting up the Club.
Our shared passion is to see more children playing organised sport for Community Clubs – in winter and summer.
With the Women’s World Cup being played in Australia this year it is a wonderful opportunity to promote the opportunities for Girls to play Football.
Registrations are now Open for the 2022-23 season via Lions Registration for everyone aged Under 6s to over 40’s.

Personal achievements
We had some fantastic personal achievements on the weekend (Day 1 of Round 13).
- Dylan Bish took his 50th wicket last week
- C2 Reds had a mighty game:
- Centuries by Akith Ekanayake (118 – our 512th ton) and Ansh Pratheesh (100 – 513th ton) put on a C2 Club record 4th wicket partnership of 191. This broke the previous record of 127 standing since 2004.
- Both players are U15s!
- Brent Larkham (B1 Red) scored our 514th ton and 3rd of the day with 101*
- Connor Mayoh (D1 Red) Just missed out on his first ton with 95 – being caught in the 71st over of the day!
- So far this season we have scored 12 tons – the most since 2017/18. The record is 23 in a season in 2012/13.
