More on our double centurions
Last week we shared a story on Luke Tabone (C4 Blue & 200*) who became just the 8th player in our history to score a double century.
We now also have a short video clip of Luke scoring his double ton – Luke Tabone’s double ton .
This is the only video record we have of any player scoring a double so is a bit of history.
Some of the background stories about our double centurions is really interesting. Here goes:
Frequency
In our 95-year history there has been 70,712 innings played – up until the end of Round 4. During this time there has been:
- 544 x century scorers – 0.76% of all innings
- 8 x double century scorers – just 0.01% of all innings
Our highest double
Our highest score is 225 scored by Kevin Smith (B1) way back in 1956/57.
Our Youngest
- Lachlan Edwards (C3 Blue) scored 209* Vs Kissing Point @ Campbell Park (19th & 26th November 2022). Lachlan was 17 years, 9 months & 23 days of age
- Brent Larkham scored 200* (B2 Vs Lankan Islanders @ Annangrove Park 4/11/2017) at just 17 years and 10 months of age to be our 2nd youngest double century scorer.

Fastest doubles
Russel Ingram
Russel scored an amazing 2 x double tons in the 2008/09 season, playing C2 with scores of 211 & 223:
- His 1st double (211) Vs Normanhurst – Warrawee @ Mimosa Oval included 25 x 4’s & 10 x 6s (160 runs in boundaries)
- The 2nd double (223) Vs Mt Colah @ Holland Rd included 32 x 4’s & 9 x 6’s (182 runs in boundaries)

Luke Tabone
Luke’s latest double included 30 x 4’s & 5 x 6’s = 150 runs in boundaries

Brent Larkham
Scored 200* (Vs Lankan Islanders @ Annangrove Park – 4/11/2017) and this included 29 x 4’s & 5 x 6’s for 146 runs in boundaries.

The race to 7,000 runs
James Makin (A1) and Michael Banner (A2 Red) are two of our long-term players and great mates who have played a lot of high-level cricket together.
Both players are about to hit the stratosphere of run scoring for our Club – reaching the 7,000-run mark. Only 2 other players have reached this milestone. This is a remarkable achievement in itself but….who will be the first to reach this target:
- Michael (1997/98 to current) – 6,979 runs in 330 innings
- James (1989-90 to current) – 6,927 runs in 400 innings
So after a combined 730 innings there is just 52 runs separating these great players and potentially, both players are just one score away from cracking the 7,000 runs mark.

Record Breakers
Earlier this season, Dave Larkham (D1 Red) set a new record of 140 wickets (currently 144) for the most wickets taken by a West Penno player in D1 Grade.
This Round, another D1 record was set with Ian ‘Diggers’ Digby taking his 29th dismissal (23 catches & 6 stumpings) off the bowling of Sarthak Khatri – well done Diggers.
This means that we now have 2 x D1 Grade record breakers playing in the same team – our Opening bowler and his wicket-keeper.

The legend of the Sheep Station Trophy
Whenever two West Penno Teams play against each other they play for the Sheep Station Trophy.
This started on 16th December 2017 with our 2 x A2 sides led by Simon Smyth & Rick Turner. The toss always involves the Captains tossing the coin in the best ‘refinement’ – always a jacket and whatever else takes your fancy.

Simon recently recalled a match that followed one of our Sheep Station Trophy games. To quote Simon directly:
“True story. I remember playing against SKLPS at Kenthurst.
Walked out to the toss in my blazer, and their Captain asked if he was allowed to do the toss without a blazer, as he didn’t know he had to wear one!
I probably still lost the toss anyway.”
Such is the legend of the Sheep Station Trophy:

Century scorers
So far, we have highlighted the record for each Grade in batting, bowling, wicket-keeping & hat-tricks. This week we list our most prolific century scorers:
- Laurie Tuckerman (A1 – 1951/52 to 1953/54) – 7 centuries
- Michael Banner (D2 to A1 – 1997/98 to current) – 7
- Matt Venables (A2 to A1 – 1991/92 to 1998/99) – 7
