Stories of West Penno – Round 5 (Day 1) – 7 November 2026

Anecdotes
Space Cadet in action

Space Cadet

It has taken a while but we have our first Space Cadet of the Year.

For those new readers, this is a prestigious Award handed out only to someone, or a Team, that has excelled in doing something that isn’t too smart.

First up though, we introduce this Award with a special musical introduction by David Bowie – Space Oddity

What makes this even better is that the recipient is an Opposition Captain.

To avoid a sense of achievement from another Club let’s just say this happened in one of the ‘C Grade’ game. In the words on our Skipper:

“You know, sometimes when you think you’ve experienced everything this great game has to throw at you, you just find something new.

Today it was stand in Skipper had to explain to the opposition Captain how the toss worked and that as the ‘home’ team Captain, he should toss and our Captain would call heads or tails.

Buzz then needed to explain what was heads and what was tails on a 20 cent coin before the toss🙂“

Hat-trick – the inside story

Last weekend Pas Indrakumar (One day Comp Skipper for our Red side), took a hat-trick.

Hat-tricks are rare. For info, in our 96 seasons as a Club there have been:

  • 573 centuries
  • 57 players taking 10 wickets or more in a game
  • 150 players have taken 7 wickets or more in an innings

When it comes to getting a hat-trick this is just the 55th in our history!

To quote Pras on the great achievement:

“It was my first-ever HAT-TRICK

Proud moment..after 35-years of playing club and grade cricket 🏏 .. even when I was top-wicket taker at UTS-Balmain for 2-consecutive years, it was hard yakka!

Finally did it!

PS: glad that umpire gave that LBW out on that 3rd ball.. 😊, that appeal went on forever.. lol 😂

Well done Pras!

Record partnership

Our C4 (Ravi) side is making a habit of winning those games that appear lost – the hallmark of a side that has something pretty special. This is the same side that won the C4 Premiership last season defending a first innings score of just 99.

They were at it again last weekend.

Chasing a first innings target of 200 (Vs Kissing Point) at one stage we were 5/45 and looking down the barrel.

But they did it again – winning with 9 wickets down and an unbeaten last wicket partnership of 27 runs.

This time there was a 106 run, 6th wicket Club record partnership by Praveg Arkadi (74) and Daksh Tyagi (55). This broke a record of 12 years with Praveg scoring his first ever 50.

Well done to Praveg and Daksh on their new record and to the whole C4 Team!

Personal achievements

While congratulating our amazing C4 side, well done to Chintan Shah (C2) who took his 100th wicket with his 6/56 last Round.

Coming up

Roger Friend (C4 Blue) is moving closer to the amazing 300 wicket landmark with 294 wickets.

Grant Gerber (Red) – has 983 and is within touching distance of his 1,000 runs

Ramil De Silva (D1) – 1,934 to move into the 2,000 run Club and the top 120 batters in our 96 year history

Nick Duck (B2) – 1,959 to reach his 2,000 run milestone.
